The first of the Uncommon Schools Preparatory schools is Leadership Preparatory Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant, which opened in August 2006 and had a very successful first year. Founding Head of School Max Koltuv leads the school, which currently serves students in grades K-2.
Roxbury Preparatory Charter School has been the highest-performing urban middle school in Massachusetts since 2004. All of the school's students are African-American or Latino and 66% of the student body is eligible for free and reduced price lunch. On six of the seven MCAS tests administered in 2006, the percentage of Roxbury Prep students scoring Advanced or Proficient was higher than that of the state's White students, effectively closing the racial achievement gap.
John King, Roxbury Prep's Co-Founder and former Co-Director for Curriculum & Instruction, plans to replicate Roxbury Prep's success in New York City. Dr. King oversees the Preparatory network, which ultimately will operate five K-8 and 5-8 schools. Roxbury Prep's Founder and former Co-Director of Operations and Finance, Evan Rudall, is the COO of Uncommon Schools.
