Excellence Charter School
of Bedford Stuyvesant

Launched in August 2004 under the leadership of Founding Principal Jabali Sawicki, who was a star teacher at Roxbury Preparatory Charter School, Excellence Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant is committed to being particularly uncommon in providing a single-sex context. Excellence, which posted exceptional results on the 2007 New York State 3rd grade English Language Arts and Math exams, has the unique opportunity to serve as a path-finder for single-sex education -particularly all-boys schools - at a time when the achievement gap between male and female students is both fast-growing and alarming.

Excellence cultivates in its young men the knowledge, skills, and character necessary to succeed academically, embrace responsibility, and become honorable citizens and courageous leaders. Authorized by the State University of New York (SUNY), Excellence is chartered to grow into an elementary and middle school and expects to develop in several years a parallel all-girls school and at least one high school. In addition, Excellence has already begun to develop early learning academies, which ultimately will include a pre-K program. At full capacity, Excellence will serve more than 1,500 students. Excellence will serve as a model for the development of elementary schools for the other networks. This network is managed by John King, the co-founder and former instructional leader of Roxbury Preparatory Charter School.
