Michael Ambriz Chief Operating Officer, North Star Academy


Michael Ambriz joined Uncommon Schools in May 2008 and serves as the Chief Operating Officer for North Star Academy. Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Mr. Ambriz served as the Managing Director, National Institute Operations for Teach For America, where he was responsible for overseeing all marketing, admissions, technology, human resources and finance projects related to corps member training. During his time at Teach For America, he held many positions, beginning at the 2003 charter Los Angeles training institute. Having subsequently been responsible for institute operations in New York City and Philadelphia, he then joined the centralized operations team to provide better support nationwide. Prior to joining Teach For America, he worked at the LAUSD Academic Mentor Program, where he helped to recruit community volunteers to tutor at 16 schools across the Los Angeles area, and put systems into place to reduce the transition time between recruitment and placement. He also managed the Cesar Chavez Service and Learning Grant for the California Governor's Office of Service and Volunteerism. Mr. Ambriz holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Norman Atkins Founder and Board Chair


Norman Atkins is the Founder and Board Chair of Uncommon Schools. He served as CEO from 2004 until mid-2008 and now leads UKA Teacher U as CEO. He is the Co-Founder and former Co-Director of North Star Academy Charter School of Newark and formerly served as Co-Executive Director of the Robin Hood Foundation in New York City. He is Founder of the New Jersey Charter Public Schools Association and is a trustee of the New York Charter Schools Association. Mr. Atkins also has supported the development and growth of charter schools in his capacity as a faculty member for New Leaders for New Schools, as a consultant to the State University of New York Charter School Institute, and as a trustee of the WKBJ Foundation. Mr. Atkins has spoken on education reform at conferences throughout the country. He has also written widely on education, poverty, and other social issues for such publications as The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Parenting, Family Life, Rolling Stone, The New York Observer, and The Washington Post. He earned his B.A. in History from Brown University and his M.A. in Educational Administration from Columbia University Teachers College where he received the school's Early Career Award in 1997.

Paul Bambrick-Santoyo Managing Director of the North Star Academy Network


Paul Bambrick-Santoyo is Managing Director of the North Star Academy Network. He formerly served as Co-Director of North Star Academy Charter School, one of New Jersey's very first and most celebrated charter public schools. During Mr. Bambrick-Santoyo’s years at the school, North Star has established itself as one of the highest achieving urban schools in New Jersey. Mr. Bambrick-Santoyo is a graduate and faculty member of New Leaders for New Schools, a national urban school leadership development program. Prior to joining North Star, he worked for six years in a bilingual school in Mexico City, where he founded the International Baccalaureate program at the middle school level and was named Teacher of the Year in 1999. He earned a B.A. in Social Justice from Duke University and his M.Ed. in School Administration via New Leaders for New Schools from the City University of New York – Baruch College.

Sara Batterton Director of Real Estate

Sara Batterton received her M.B.A. from Columbia Business School in 2007 with a concentration in Real Estate and Finance. During her time at Columbia, Ms. Batterton was a recipient of the Forté Fellowship for Women in Business and a Teaching Assistant for the Real Estate Finance course, and also managed the school’s fundraising efforts for the Social Enterprise Summer Fellowship Program. Ms. Batterton joined Uncommon Schools as Director of Real Estate in the summer of 2008. Prior to this, she worked as an Associate at Jones Lang LaSalle, a commercial real estate firm, providing real estate finance and development consulting to public agencies. Ms. Batterton’s previous experience also includes roles in community economic development with the Higher Education Public Finance group at Lehman Brothers, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions. In these roles she was responsible for managing foundation investments in affordable housing and financial services and also worked to develop innovative financial services delivery programs for low-income families and communities. She received her B.A. cum laude in Political Science and Spanish from Columbia University.

Kim Boyce Special Assistant to the Managing Directors of the Collegiate and Excellence/Preparatory Networks


Kim Boyce joined Uncommon Schools in 2008 and serves as the Special Assistant to the Managing Directors of the Collegiate, Excellence, and Preparatory Networks. Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Mrs. Boyce served as Program Associate at Rosie’s For All Kids Foundation, a national foundation that provides grants for tuition subsidies, playgrounds, equipment and supplies, small renovation projects, and staff development to nonprofit center-based childcare facilities serving children from birth to five years. During her time at Rosie’s For All Kids Foundation, Mrs. Boyce was responsible for the administration of the Early Childhood Care and Education grants program and managed the CyberGrants grants management database. She was a member of the Grants Managers Network and Grantmakers for Children Youth and Families. She also worked at Harlem Children’s Zone as Administrative Assistant to the Senior Manager of the Harlem Children’s Zone project. Mrs. Boyce graduated from the University of Hartford with a B.S. in Finance and Insurance.

Samantha Brenner Director of Operations


Samantha Brenner joined Uncommon Schools as Director of Operations in 2008. She received her M.B.A. from Columbia Business School, where she received the Nathan Gantcher Prize for Social Enterprise, oversaw events for the Social Enterprise Club, served as a Teaching Assistant for an elective course on education consulting, and ran a student volunteer program that assists economically disadvantaged, unemployed New Yorkers with job interview preparation. During the summer of 2007, Samantha served as an Education Pioneers Fellow with the Operations team at KIPP New York. Prior to business school, she was an Associate Manager at the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit, non-partisan organization in Washington, DC. In this capacity she consulted to federal agencies on issues related to strategic human capital management, including workforce planning, succession management and recruiting. Samantha holds a B.A. in Politics from Pomona College.

Kristen Bridgeman Recruitment Coordinator


Kristen Bridgeman joined Uncommon Schools in the summer of 2008 as Recruitment Coordinator after graduating from Northwestern University with a B.A in Social Policy and History. While at Northwestern, Ms. Bridgeman spent time working at an after school program in the Cabrini Green neighborhood of Chicago. In her role Ms. Bridgeman worked to develop an expanded tutoring program, created a tutoring manual for new volunteers, researched and developed recommendations for reorganizing the program, and secured a grant to fund the suggested changes. In addition to her work in Chicago, Ms. Bridgeman has interned in the legislative department of the American Federation of Teachers in Washington D.C. as well as in the local office of Senator Edward Kennedy.

Lauren Brom Associate Director of Recruitment


Lauren Brom joined Uncommon Schools in 2008 after serving as a Teach For America corps member in New York City. In her two years as a math teacher, Ms. Brom led her students to achieve a class average of 82% content mastery. Further, 99% of the 7th grade students at MS 317 (KAPPA 2) passed the state math assessment. In addition to teaching, Ms. Brom wrote her school’s 7th grade math curriculum and led an after school program that reinforced remedial math skills and allowed students to develop entrepreneurial skills by creating their own mini-businesses. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Brom created and executed staff workshops on collecting and tracking student data to differentiate instruction and served as the Chair of the School Leadership Team. Ms. Brom received her B.A. in Economics and Media Studies from Pomona College and will soon complete her M.A. in Teaching from Pace University.

Denise Bruxelles Director of Special Projects - Curriculum and Instruction of the Collegiate and Excellence/Preparatory Networks


Before coming to Uncommon Schools, Denise Bruxelles was Chair of the English Department at DreamYard Preparatory High School in the Bronx, where she also served as co-founder and co-advisor of the school newspaper, yearbook, and National Honor Society. Ms. Bruxelles began her teaching career in New York as a 2003 Teach For America (TFA) Corps Member. In addition to teaching middle and high school English Language Arts (ELA), she has served as a School Team Leader and ELA Curriculum & Content Specialist for TFA, and as a lab-site teacher and school-based new teacher mentor for the Department of Education. She earned a B.A. in English from George Washington University and a Masters in Secondary English Education from Pace University. Ms. Bruxelles is a Doctoral Candidate in Curriculum & Teaching at Teachers College.

Jennifer Camus Associate Director of Recruitment


Jennifer Camus joined Uncommon Schools in 2008 following a role as a Teach For America corps member in South Los Angeles. During her time as a corps member, she created and taught rigorous Math Prep, Creative Writing, and Journalism curriculums for the newly founded ninth grade elective courses. She led students to achieve a class average of about 85% content mastery in the Math Prep elective, and about 88% content mastery in the Creative Writing/Journalism elective while at her placement site. Outside of the classroom, Ms.Camus established the first ever yearbook, coached the dance team, and served as a lecturer for the Gilder-Lehrman American History Academy. Currently, Jennifer is involved in the development of the Writing Our Dreams project, a start-up non-profit organization that empowers inner city youth in Los Angeles and New York City. Jennifer received her B.S. in Public Policy, Management, and Planning with an emphasis in Public Management and a minor in Business from the University of Southern California and her M.A. in Education and teaching credential from Loyola Marymount University.

Frances Cheung Office Manager


Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Frances Cheung served as Program Administrator at A Better Chance, a national non-profit organization that identifies, recruits, and refers talented students of color to top independent day and boarding schools across the country. During her time at A Better Chance, Ms. Cheung oversaw the administrative logistics for the College Preparatory Schools Program, including managing the year long application process for over 2,300 applicants. She has also worked at Seedco, a national non-profit intermediary, in the capacity of Operations Assistant, and at AFS-USA Intercultural Programs as Project Coordinator for the Diversity Recruitment Department. While at AFS-USA, she assisted in the implementation of a New York City volunteer chapter to leverage the organization’s diversity recruitment efforts in increasing international educational opportunities for low-income students of color. Ms. Cheung received a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Cultural Studies from New School University.

Abby Cooperberg Senior Accountant, North Star Academy


Abby Cooperberg joined Uncommon Schools as Senior Accountant with extensive experience in management and systems consulting. Ms. Cooperberg worked at Andersen Consulting (currently known as Accenture) for six years on various projects in the government, non-profit, and financial services sectors. She then joined Bankers Trust as a Vice President, where she worked as a senior project manager and systems liaison for the Defined Contribution business. Ms. Cooperberg has most recently taken time off from the business world to focus on raising her family. She has been very active as a volunteer for the Montclair school system, the Junior League of Montclair/Newark (JLMN), and various other organizations. She served on the board of the JLMN, responsible for league projects. Ms. Cooperberg graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in Accounting and Computer Science.

Autumn DiGaetano-Fedoruk Associate Director of Operations


Autumn DiGaetano-Fedoruk joined Uncommon Schools as an Associate Director of Operations in the summer of 2008. Prior to joining the Operations team, Ms. DiGaetano-Fedoruk matriculated into the Teach for America (TFA) 2005 Corps as a Bilingual/ESL teacher in Central Bronx, New York. Teaching Early ESL Reading Intervention to 6th – 8th grade students, she was introduced to and found a love for strategic educational intervention. Following her two year commitment with TFA, she moved to South America to strategically reorganize the marketing structure/recruitment plan of ProWorld Service Corps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable economic development in developing nations throughout Latin America and Southeast Asia. Ms. DiGaetano-Fedoruk holds an M.S. in Bilingual Education from Pace University and a dual B.A. in Economics and Linguistics from the University of Arizona.

Terri Ferraguto National Director of Recruitment


Terri Ferraguto serves as National Director of Recruitment. She worked as Senior Program Coordinator for the Northeast Region of A Better Chance from 2003 to 2006, during which time she helped place more than 300 students of color into more than 100 of the nation’s top independent and public college preparatory schools. Ms. Ferraguto was a 1999 Teach for America corps member in the Bay Area, where she taught fourth and fifth grades at Belle Haven School in Ravenswood City School District. During her second year of teaching, 83% of her students advanced at least two grade levels in mathematics. Ms. Ferraguto has worked as a Corps Member Adviser and an Alumni Recruiter for Teach for America. She received her B.A. in Diversity Studies in Schools and Society, a self-designed major, from Connecticut College and her M.Ed. from Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Meghan Fitzgerald Director of Special Education


Meghan Fitzgerald joined Uncommon Schools as Director of Special Education in 2006. She is the author of the “InterActive Therapy Group Special Education Resource Manuals” for New York City and New York State Charter Schools, a set of guidance documents and best practice suggestions for administrative and instructional personnel. She has led training sessions – at the Center for Charter School Excellence – for special education staff to support the use and development of the strategies in the New York City Manual. Ms. Fitzgerald has presented workshops on best practices in special education for the California Charter School Association, Building Excellent Schools, and the New York State Charter School Association. She is working with Uncommon Schools to establish collaborative support systems for principals, teachers, and therapists to promote student achievement and development. Currently, Ms. Fitzgerald is pursuing her M.A. in Learning Disabilities from City University of New York – Hunter College with a specialization in education for gifted students. She earned her B.S. in General and Special Education with a concentration in Spanish from the State University of New York – Geneseo.

Chakana Fowler Director of Finance


Prior to joining Uncommon Schools in 2008, Chakana Fowler was an Associate at JPMorgan in the Restructuring Group where she worked on deal teams to arrange debt financing for companies in financial distress. She also worked at Morgan Stanley in Fixed Income research where she was responsible for writing comprehensive reports on companies in the REIT, specialty finance, and consumer goods sectors. Ms. Fowler’s prior experience in education includes two years as a New York City Teaching Fellow during which she taught math at a South Bronx middle school. As a teacher, she formed an organization for her eighth grade students to encourage discussion of their college goals and to teach students about the path to higher education. Ms. Fowler received a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Miami. She received her M.S. in Mathematics Education from the City College of New York and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School where she was a recipient of the Robert Toigo Fellowship.

Catherine Goldenheim Associate Director of Recruitment


Kate Goldenheim joined Uncommon Schools in 2008 as Associate Director of Recruitment. She previously worked as the Director of Breakthrough New Haven (formerly Summerbridge New Haven), an academic enrichment program for public middle school students that also serves as a workshop in education for high school and college students interested in teaching. While at Breakthrough Ms. Goldenheim was responsible for designing after school and summer programming, recruiting and selecting students, hiring and training teachers, developing partnerships, managing staff members, evaluating all program components, and fundraising. She also taught and advised middle school and high school students at Hopkins School, an independent school in New Haven and Breakthrough New Haven’s host school. She received her B.A. in English from Harvard College and her M.Ed. from the School Leadership Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Carolyn Hack Senior Director of Finance


Carolyn Hack is a 2005 graduate of Columbia Business School, where she was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and was awarded the faculty-bestowed prize for Nonprofit and Public Management. Ms. Hack joined Uncommon Schools as Director of Finance in the summer of 2006. Prior to this, she worked as the Associate Executive Director of Development and Administration at Anchor, Inc. While at Anchor, Ms. Hack was responsible for the financial management of the organization, strategic planning, the development of a new evaluation model, the oversight of a capital renovation project, and fundraising. Her previous work experience also includes a summer associate position for the Chief Financial Officer of Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. Prior to business school, Ms. Hack taught high school mathematics and coached basketball and soccer for five years in Northern California. She received her B.A. in Economics from Johns Hopkins University and her M.A. from Stanford University’s School of Education.

Mina Hai Technology Project Manager


Mina Hai joined Uncommon Schools in July 2008 as Technology Project Manager. Ms. Hai has over a decade of experience in the technology sector, working across a broad variety of industries. She most recently consulted with a health care organization, helping the organization to define its data warehousing strategy. Ms. Hai’s previous experience includes several years at McKinsey and Co. in the roles of business analyst and project manager as well as a VISTA internship in New York City, where among her responsibilities she conducted job skills training programs for high school students and for homeless adults. Ms. Hai holds a B.A. in History from Cornell University.

Cortney Harris Grants Manager


Cortney Harris has over 10 years of experience in government, youth, and community development programs. Before joining Uncommon Schools as Grants Manager in 2007, Ms. Harris served as the Assistant Director of College and Community Programs at the University of Rochester. There she led the admission office’s diversity recruitment efforts. Previously, she worked in the City of Rochester’s Mayor’s Office for the Pathways to Peace Program. While at the Mayor’s Office, she helped secure over $2 million in federal and state grant funds to support the program. Ms. Harris is the CEO of Roc City Dance and Fitness, a dance studio that focuses on arts and fitness awareness for urban youth and adults. Ms. Harris received a B.A. in Sociology from the University at Albany.

Elana Jacobs Special Assistant to the CEO


Elana Jacobs joins Uncommon Schools following graduation from Princeton University where she earned a B.A. in Psychology. Her prior work experience includes an internship at FD Communications Consultancy, where as an intern for the crisis communications team, she conducted case studies, performed daily media sweeps, and assisted in the media training of corporate clients. In addition, Ms. Jacobs interned at Sesame Workshop, where she assisted in the creation of an artwork database as well as in the proofreading and editing of children’s books. She is an active contributor to Flavorpill NYC, a weekly e-newsletter that reviews cultural events in New York. During her undergraduate years, Ms. Jacobs volunteered with an ESL program, a community service freshman orientation program, and a local preschool for underprivileged children. She also hosted a weekly radio show on WPRB, the Princeton radio station.

John King Managing Director of the Excellence and Preparatory Networks


John King is the Managing Director of the Excellence and Preparatory Networks of Uncommon Schools, a non-profit charter management organization. Dr. King is a Co-Founder and former Co-Director for Curriculum & Instruction of Roxbury Preparatory Charter School, a nationally recognized urban college preparatory public school that closed the Massachusetts racial achievement gap and was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of eight top charter schools in the country. Prior to co-founding Roxbury Prep, he taught high school history at City on a Hill Charter School in Boston and Saint John's School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. King earned a B.A. in Government from Harvard University, an M.A. in the Teaching of Social Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and an Ed.D. in Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Lindsay Kruse Director of Leadership Development


Prior to her role as Director of Leadership Development, Lindsay Kruse was the Director of Operations for Uncommon Schools. In that role, she developed the Operations infrastructure for Uncommon including defining and developing the role of school-based Operations leaders, developing systems to support those leaders, and managing projects that leveraged scale across schools.
She received her M.B.A. from Columbia Business School with a concentration in Social Enterprise in 2006. Winner of the Joanne Martin Award for Excellence in Public and Nonprofit Management, she has experience working with many youth development and poverty-fighting agencies including Ashoka, Robin Hood Foundation, Groundwork, Echoing Green, and the UNDP’s Growing Sustainable Business Initiative. Before earning her M.B.A., Ms. Kruse worked as a management consultant for Ernst & Young /Capgemini, where she was responsible for business process analysis and project management for start-up companies and Fortune 500 businesses alike. In this capacity, she spearheaded the business process redesign of eight operational areas for a multinational company and helped manage the requirements of a $7M technology development project. Ms. Kruse also worked on the founding team for the School Evaluation Services project for Standard and Poors, now known as SchoolMatters.com. She is currently an Associate Resident in the Broad Residency in Urban Education and holds a B.Sc. from Cornell University.

Doug Lemov Managing Director of the True North Public Schools Network


Doug Lemov is the Founder of School Performance, an Albany-based non-profit that provides diagnostic assessments, performance data analysis, and academic consulting to high performing charter schools. He is a founder and the former principal of the Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter School in Boston, regarded as one of the highest performing urban charter schools in the country. After leaving Academy of the Pacific Rim, Mr. Lemov served as the Vice President for Accountability at the State University of New York Charter Schools Institute, the leading authorizer of charters in New York, where he designed and implemented a rigorous school accountability system. He has since served as a consultant to such organizations as KIPP, New Leaders for New Schools, and Building Excellent Schools. Mr. Lemov is a Trustee of the New York Charter Schools Association and of KIPP Tech Valley Charter School. He has a B.A. from Hamilton College, an M.A. from Indiana University, and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.

Twinkle Morgan Director of Development


Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Twinkle Morgan was a Vice President with JP Morgan Private Bank from 2000 to 2005. In that capacity, she served as a relationship manager responsible for providing wealth management solutions to high net worth families. Prior to working on Wall Street, Ms. Morgan worked with Accenture for three years as a Strategy Consultant. She also served as the firm's primary liaison to Hands On Atlanta, a non-profit organization that offers professionally organized volunteer and project planning services to the Atlanta business community. In this role, she led corporate volunteer groups in the selection, development, and completion of community programs across the city. Ms. Morgan currently serves on the Executive Board of Trail Blazers, a non-profit which provides economically disadvantaged children with outdoor educational and leadership experiences. She also volunteers with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Women's Board Association and the Wharton Business School Admissions Office. As a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Scholar, she earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Spelman College and a B.S. cum laude in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ms. Morgan received an M.B.A. from the Wharton Business School.

Jenny Ng Senior Accountant


Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Jenny Ng worked for Kiwi Partners Inc. as an accounting consultant responsible for general accounting, audit preparation, financial reports, and grant reporting. In her role, Ms. Ng worked with an array of non-profit organizations, ranging from start up non-profits to large, well-established organizations, and including The Brain Trauma Foundation, Water Aid USA, and International Network for Public Schools. While at Kiwi Partners, she assisted in developing a set of standard accounting systems for organizations across various social sectors. Ms. Ng is a certified not for profit accountant and is currently pursing an M.P.A. in Non-Profit Management from City University of New York – Baruch College. She earned her B.A. in Financial Investment from CUNY – Baruch.

Brett Peiser Managing Director of the Collegiate Network


Brett Peiser is Founder and former Principal and Executive Director of Boston Collegiate Charter School, a college preparatory middle and high school serving 400 students. From 2002-2006, Boston Collegiate was the only school in Massachusetts to have 100% of its 10th grade students pass the Math and English MCAS exams, a statewide graduation requirement. In 2005, Mr. Peiser founded Collegiate Charter Schools, an Uncommon Schools network of middle and high schools in Brooklyn, New York. The network's first school – Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School – opened in August 2005 and was the #1 ranked school among the 1,200+ public schools graded on the NYC Department of Education 2007 progress reports. The network’s second and third schools – Kings Collegiate and Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate – opened in summers 2007 and 2008, respectively. Mr. Peiser is a graduate of New York City Public Schools and a resident of Brooklyn where he taught History at Midwood High School and founded an after-school community basketball program for Midwood/Flatbush teenagers. Mr. Peiser received a B.A. from Brown University and an M.P.P. degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he also earned the 2001 Rising Star award.

Joshua Phillips Chief Operating Officer


Joshua Phillips joined Uncommon Schools as COO in the summer of 2008. He was previously the Co-Director of Roxbury Preparatory Charter School in Boston. For four consecutive years, Roxbury Prep has been the highest-performing urban middle school in Massachusetts. On the 2007 state 8th grade math exam, Roxbury Prep outperformed every school in the state. A Co-Director at Roxbury Prep for six years, Mr. Phillips brings a track record of results and extensive operational and management experience to the role of COO. He previously served as the Enrichment Coordinator and sixth grade World History teacher at Roxbury Prep. Mr. Phillips also was a History teacher-intern at the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science while earning an Ed.M. in Teaching and Curriculum from Harvard University. He received his B.A. in Political Science from Colgate University and his M.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Ingrid Reynoso General Counsel and Director of HR

Ingrid Reynoso most recently served as General Counsel and Director of Business Affairs for an internet marketing company, where she oversaw the legal, financial, human resources, and other departments, prior to joining Uncommon Schools. Her commitment to education began during college when she taught first and second grade students for the Mission Hill Summer Program in Roxbury, Massachusetts. For the years that followed, Ms. Reynoso continued to serve the Mission Hill community as the Personnel and Community Outreach Director for the Mission Hill After School Program. After graduating from college and law school, Ms. Reynoso worked as a corporate attorney for two years. She then served as Program Director and Developer for the Pre-University Program, an organization that empowers immigrant youth by strengthening their English reading, writing, and verbal skills, while also providing a comprehensive arts program. Ms. Reynoso holds a B.A. in Government from Harvard University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She is admitted to the New York State Bar.

Franklin Rosado Chief Technology Officer

Frank Rosado is the Chief Technology Officer at Uncommon Schools. Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Mr. Rosado was the Technical Consulting Manager for NPower NY. Mr. Rosado helped develop the NPower Basic program. NPower Basic is an outsourced technology infrastructure solution that delivers non-profits a top notch "in-a-box" technical infrastructure. This, in turn, provides a model that enables graduates of NPower NY's Technology Services Corps to deliver high impact serivces to the everyday operations of an array of non profits. He also led the effort to improve the quality of technology consulting that NPpwer NY provided to their non profit clients. Prior to joining NPower NY, Mr. Rosado worked at Marsh Inc. where he provided network support and disaster recovery expertise. Prior to joining Marsh, Mr. Rosado helped start Henry Street Settlement Youth Services Division's computing environment for education and administrative purposes. Mr. Rosado has a B.A. in History and Political Science from Williams College, an M.S. in IS from Baruch College, as well as several technical certifications.

Evan Rudall Chief Executive Officer


Prior to becoming CEO in July 2008, Evan Rudall served as the organization’s Chief Operating Officer for nearly three years. Mr. Rudall is the Founder and former Co-Director of Roxbury Preparatory Charter School, a nationally recognized urban college preparatory public school that was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of eight of the highest-performing charter schools in the country. After founding Roxbury Prep, Mr. Rudall served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning of the New York City Department of Education. Prior to founding Roxbury Prep, Mr. Rudall directed Summerbridge Louisville, a non-profit academic enrichment program. He also taught, coached, and served as Assistant Middle School Director at Kentucky Country Day School. Mr. Rudall received his B.A. from Wesleyan University, his Ed.M. from Harvard University, and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Columbia Law Review.

Minnie Setty Associate Director of Operations


Minnie Setty joined Uncommon Schools in 2007 as Associate Director of Operations. Prior to joining Uncommon Schools, Minnie was a Senior Associate Consultant with Bain & Company, where she worked with private equity and major financial services clients on solving key strategic issues. Ms. Setty’s experience and accomplishments while at Bain include evaluating potential acquisition targets, performing in-depth revenue modeling and forecasting, determining business process outsourcing solution, and evaluating vendor proposals on financial and risk metrics. She is also the Founder and Office Head of the San Francisco chapter of Inspire, a pre-MBA volunteer organization which provides consulting services to local nonprofits. Ms. Setty received a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Economics from Stanford University.

Julie Shah Associate Director of Marketing and Development


Prior to joining Uncommon Schools in 2008, Julie Shah taught fifth grade math at North Star Academy in Newark, NJ. Ms. Shah began her career as a 2004 Teach For America corps member in Philadelphia, where she taught sixth grade math and reading. As a corps member, Ms. Shah helped to develop and pilot the school’s Inclusion program, designed and presented professional development on Inclusion in Special Education, and coordinated school-wide events such as College and Career Week. As an undergraduate, Ms. Shah served as Business Manager of the internationally-distributed Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, managing the operations and budget of the Journal as well as developing its first strategic business plan. She also traveled to India where she researched and published a report for the Gujarat State AIDS Control Society on the potential for NGO networks to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in high-risk populations. Ms. Shah received a B.S. in Foreign Service (magna cum laude) from Georgetown University and a M.S. in Education from St. Joseph’s University.

Leah Shalev Associate Director of Recruitment


Leah Shalev joined Uncommon Schools in 2007 following a role as a Corps Member Advisor for Teach For America. In this role, she helped prepare a group of 2007 New York City corps members for their teaching commitment. Ms. Shalev started her career in education as a Recruitment Fellow with Teach For America, where she worked to recruit college seniors from six southern colleges and universities to apply to the Teach For America corps. She then joined Teach For America as a 2005 corps member and taught at P.S. 138 in the Bronx for two years as a second grade teacher. In her years at P.S. 138, Ms. Shalev worked to ensure that her students achieved a class average of 83% math content mastery and that they made gains equivalent to one and half years in reading. She also served as a school team leader. Ms. Shalev received her B.A. in History from Northwestern University and her M.S. in Teaching from Pace University.

Miguel Soares Infrastructure Manager


Miguel Soares is the Infrastructure Manager at Uncommon Schools. Before joining Uncommon Schools, Mr. Soares was the Information Technology Director of Independence Care System (ICS), a non-profit HMO that enables disabled and chronically ill New Yorkers to live outside the health care facility setting. While at ICS, he oversaw the upgrade of an infrastructure that supported a staff increase from 80 to 125 in less than two years. He managed myriad projects, such as a remote access rollout and training sessions for staff. Before joining ICS, Mr. Soares was an independent consultant who worked with small non-profit organizations through NPowerNY. He trained the staff of non-profit agencies in the use of Microsoft Office applications, and led projects advising them in strategic planning for their systems architecture. Mr. Soares has a B.S. in Economics with a minor in Computer Science from Fordham University.

Ilene Squires Associate Director of Recruitment


Ilene Squires joined Uncommon Schools as Associate Director of Recruitment in 2008. Her interest in education reform began when she was a 2003 Teach For America corps member teaching Bilingual Kindergarten in the South Bronx. Immediately following her corps service, she served as a founding teacher at Harlem Link Charter School where she later served as the Dean of Students. Ms. Squires is the recipient of the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund fellowship. JFMF is exclusively sponsored by the Japanese government and aspires to integrate international perspectives and methodologies to enrich American educational infrastructure. Ms. Squires received her B.A. in Communication with a specialization in International and Intercultural Studies and minor in Spanish from San Diego State University. While with TFA she earned a M.S.T. in Childhood Education with a Bilingual Extension from Fordham University.

Megan Zug Director of Marketing


Megan C. Zug joined Uncommon Schools as Director of Marketing in 2007, having consulted to the organization on philanthropic partnerships and strategy in 2006. Prior to joining Uncommon, Ms. Zug was, from 2003 until 2006, the Director of Strategic Development at Boston Collegiate Charter School, where she managed fund development, marketing, and organizational strategy. Previously, Ms. Zug served as Program Officer at the Tiger Foundation in New York City where she worked with the Director of the foundation to manage $4 million in annual grantmaking in the areas of education reform, job training, and social services. Her career began in the role of Associate in J.P. Morgan’s Community Relations and Philanthropic Services department. She serves on the EdVestors Education Review Panel and on the Advisory Committee of the Trinity Education for Excellence Program. Ms. Zug received a B.A. in Government from Georgetown University and an M.P.P. degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
