Diversity Mission Statement

Uncommon Schools is committed to building a talented team that reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our scholars. By building schools that reflect and represent the communities we serve, we enhance the cultural competence of our scholars, preparing them for a multicultural, global future. Our goal is to create an inclusive and stimulating work environment by attracting, developing, and retaining a collaborative and dynamic team.

Diversity at Work

The Summer Teaching Fellowship (STF) is a unique, highly competitive teacher recruitment and preparation program for college juniors of color. While open to candidates of all races and backgrounds, STF has a particular focus on building the pipeline of black and Latino teachers in Uncommon Schools.  Fifty-two (52) STF alumni currently teach in Uncommon classrooms. I came to Uncommon from the West Coast, and to education from an electrical engineering degree at UCLA. My engineering background comes in handy as my role requires that I oversee all non-instructional management (budgeting, scheduling, facilities, and much, much more) for our Newark schools and students. I love being responsible for the systems that allow teachers to focus on teaching and students to focus on learning.

I also love working with people who are constantly striving to get better, and who feel invested in the success of every student and teacher at Uncommon. And, of course, I love watching the results of our work – a thriving, growing community of schools where students feel safe, loved, and excited to learn.



I grew up in Crown Heights, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. I traveled for three hours every day to a school where my mom felt I would have access to better opportunities. At first, I resisted the early mornings and the challenges of being one of the only Black students in my school. As my reading and writing skills began to flourish, though, I quickly understood what prompted my mom’s efforts.

In 2008, I interviewed to be a second grade teacher at Uncommon. I became overwhelmed with emotion as I realized the impact I could have on so many children.  My interviewer understood, acknowledged how emotional this work can be, and spoke of the shared mission—getting all students to and through college—felt by Uncommon staff.  I knew I had found the right place to work. Six years later, I became the principal at one of Uncommon's elementary schools.


I grew up with Uncommon, as a student at Roxbury Prep. My parents came to the United States in search of better opportunities for their children.  They wanted to ensure that my four siblings and I had a different future. They knew that future hinged on receiving a great education, which we found at Roxbury Prep. While I remember a few “favorite” teachers, I mainly remember the loving and supportive culture that permeated the entire school community.

Now, as a 6th grade math teacher at Roxbury Prep, I give that same love and support to my own students. I especially enjoy working with struggling students, because I feel such pride when they “get it”. I also love having a job that allows me to continue to push my own growth and development.  Beyond being personally rewarding, seeing my growth as a teacher allows me to do that much more for my students!
