Parents Attend Open House |
Parents/guardians interested in North Star should attend an Open House to learn more and decide whether North Star is the right choice for themselves and their children.
A parent MUST attend an Open House in order to fill out an application.
 |
Students Attend Simulated School Day |
Parents who are still interested after the Open House should sign up their children for a Simulated School Day, where students can experience what North Star is really like. Incoming Kindergarteners do not need to attend a Simulated School Day; however, Elementary Campus tours will occur during the week after Open Houses to help parents decide whether North Star is right for them.

Students Complete Application |
After parents attend an Open House and students attend a Simulated School Day, they can obtain an official application for admission to North Star. The names of all applicants will be placed in a random lottery.
Note: Applicants must be residents of Newark.

A Free, Charter Public School
Hailed by President George W. Bush during his visit as "a jewel of excellence," North Star is one of New Jersey's most celebrated charter public schools. It has two middle schools and a college preparatory high school, serving over 450 students. Fourth graders may apply to enter the 5th grade at one of two North Star middle schools. Children entering Kindergarten may apply to enroll at the Elementary Campus.
Educational Excellence
Starting in Kindergarten, North Star Academy prepares students for college. 100% of North Star’s high school graduates have left North Star and enrolled into colleges across the country. North Star consistently outperforms the Newark school district in every category in standardized state exams. The school features a rigorous college prep program, pushing students to meet the highest standards in Math, Science, English, History, and Spanish. The school is wired for the 21st century so students can master computers as tools.
Small Classes, Individual Attention
With an average of 18 children per class, North Star gives students the individual attention they need to grow to their fullest academic potential.
11-Month School Year, Extended School Day
North Star Academy runs for 11 months, from late August to July. A regular school day begins at 7:45 a.m. and has activities and programs running until 5:00 p.m.
Safe, Supportive, Structured Environment
North Star students must follow, and parents are expected to support, the school's code of conduct. Hard work is required: teachers expect students to complete two hours of homework each night. Students wear school uniforms and conduct themselves with dignity and honor. Discipline is serious and caring. The faculty, staff, and students meet regularly as a community. Teamwork is emphasized in outdoor education trips.
Newark As Our Backyard
Newark offers many rich resources to our students. North Star aims to take full advantage of the city’s rich cultural institutions as part of its campus - including the Newark Museum, Newark public libraries and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
Proven Leadership
North Star's caring, committed, talented faculty is led by James Verrilli, Julie Jackson, Michael Mann and Shana Pyatt--experienced, innovative, devoted teachers, who are recognized locally and nationally as path-finders in education. North Star's administration is led by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, a leader in the national charter school movement.
Parent Involvement
Parents are expected to ensure that their children are ready to work and to live by the school's strict code of conduct. Parents volunteer, pick up their children's report cards, and sign a covenant pledging to work with the school so that students make the most of their educational opportunity.
Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to North Star as new students, children must be Newark residents. For the fall of 2008, applications for incoming Kindergarten and 5th graders will be accepted. They must be motivated to begin preparing for college now by working harder than they've ever worked before.
