College Placement Results
100% of North Star’s high school graduates have left North Star and enrolled into colleges across the country. Our graduates typically get four acceptances each and approximately 95% are currently attending four-year universities, such as the University of Chicago, Oberlin, Mount Holyoke, Boston College, and Rutgers. Over the past two years, North Star's 4-year college placement rate ranks highest among all high schools in the state of New Jersey. In contrast, in 2004 only 26% of the graduating seniors (who represent only 50% of those who started high school) in the Newark District reported planning on attending 4-year colleges. There is no verification of how many of these Newark students actually attended.

Middle School Results
North Star’s eighth graders perform extremely well on the state-mandated, Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA), which is given in three core content areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. Since they first took the test in 2000, North Star students have effectively closed the achievement gap with their peers across the state. In 2006, of the general education students, 93% scored proficient or above in Language Arts, 77% were proficient in Mathematics, and 97% were proficient in Science – results which are typically double the Newark District's average and higher than some statewide averages as well.
To give a sense of the true value added by the North Star program, the category "Neighborhood Schools" is based on the projection of where North Star student would likely attend - their assigned neighborhood schools - if North Star did not exist. The test scores from those schools are appropriately weighted to create the comparison passing rate.
High School Results
North Star eleventh graders have performed extremely well on the state-mandated High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA), which was given in two core content areas: Language Arts and Mathematics. Passing both the Literacy and Math components of the HSPA is a requirement for graduation. Thus, any student who fails either part of the HSPA must take it again in their senior year. If they continue failing, they must graduate through an alternative process called Special Review Assessment (SRA). Only 84.6% of New Jersey general education students graduate by passing the HSPA, and only 35.3% of Newark general education students reach that achievement. North Star is proud to note that 100% of its students passed the HSPA, far outpacing the results of the district and the state.
