Jaynemarie Angbah   Social Worker

Jaynemarie Angbah returns to Kings Collegiate as the School Social Worker. After completing a B.A in Psychology and African Studies at Bucknell University, Ms. Angbah served as an alternative education teacher.  She then worked as a teaching fellow with Citizen Schools at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School and as a counselor at New Mission High School (both in Boston, MA). She continues to offer trainings on culturally competent curriculum development and instruction for organizations in the New England area. Ms. Angbah currently serves an adjunct professor in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA.  She holds a M. Ed.  in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University as well as an Ed. M in Risk and Prevention and an advanced degree in School Adjustment Counseling/School Social Work from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.




Elizabeth Antczak   5th Grade Science

Elizabeth Antczak returns to Kings Collegiate as the 5th grade science teacher.  After graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology & Society and a Bachelor of Science in Urban & Regional Studies, Ms. Antczak worked for City Year in after-school and community service programs in Cleveland, OH.  Before joining Kings, Ms. Antczak taught middle school science in the Bronx as a Teach or America corps member and completed her Master of Science degree in Teaching at Pace University.




Lauren Bailes   7th Grade ELA

After studying English Literature and Secondary Education at Eastern University, Lauren Bailes joined Teach for America and taught middle school literacy in East New York, Brooklyn for two years.  In that capacity, Ms. Bailes also served on the School Leadership Team and Data Inquiry Team where she engineered intervention plans for students in grades 6-8.  She also helped to write and produce Teach for America’s Student Achievement Toolkit, a collection of unit plans, lesson plans and benchmark assessments used by Middle School ELA teachers across New York City.  After studying at Pace University, she is now pursuing her Masters as a Literacy Specialist at Columbia University Teachers College.  Ms. Bailes grew up near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and is excited to join Kings Collegiate as the 7th grade Literacy teacher. 




Stephen Cassady   7th Grade History

Stephen Cassady returns to Kings Collegiate Charter School this year as the 7th Grade History Teacher.  Before coming to Kings Collegiate, Mr. Cassady taught two years at Edison-Fareria High School as a Teach for America corps member in Philadelphia, PA.  Prior to that, Mr. Cassady received a Bachelor of Arts in History at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH.  Mr. Cassady is originally from Cincinnati, and is currently enrolled at Hunter College where he expects to receive his Master’s in Childhood Education in May 2010. 





Christie Chow   Director of Operations

Christie Chow joins Kings Collegiate after working with Teach for America in their New York Regional office.  While at Teach for America, Ms. Chow worked with Principals in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn to identify and hire new teachers.  Prior to Teach for America, she worked with Academic Studies Associates as the Director of United Kingdom Programs, where she oversaw and directed student study-abroad programs for four years.  Ms. Chow graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.S. in Special Education and Human and Organizational Development and began her career in the classroom teaching Deaf Education to middle school students.  Ms. Chow is originally from Oklahoma City and is thrilled to be at Kings Collegiate. 

 


Susan Crandall Hart   Special Education Coordinator

Susan returns as the Special Education Teacher/Coordinator at Kings Collegiate Charter School. After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Policy Studies from Syracuse University in 2004, Susan Crandall worked to recruit new teachers for the Teach for America program. She then taught 8th grade 12:1 special education in Bedford-Stuyvesant as a 2005 Teach for America corps member. She earned her Master’s of Science for Teachers in Middle Childhood/Students with Disabilities from Pace University in 2007.




Julie Falbo   5th Grade Math Procedures

Julie Falbo received her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota.   She worked at a charter school in Minneapolis as a Volunteer and Family Outreach Coordinator before moving to the Mississippi Delta, where she taught 4th grade as a Teach for America corps member.  In July 2008, Ms. Falbo completed her Master of Education degree at Delta State University.  This is her second year at Kings Collegiate teaching 5th grade Math Procedures.




Jenny Fauci   6th Grade Science

Jenny Fauci was the founding 6th grade science teacher at Kings Collegiate last year. Prior to coming to Kings, Ms. Fauci spent two summers working for D.C. Preparatory Academy Charter School in Washington D.C, her hometown. She also spent a summer teaching 5th and 6th graders at the Summerbridge Program in San Francisco. She graduated from Harvard College with a B.A. in Social Studies focusing on issues of gender, race, and inequality. She is currently working towards a Masters in Education at the Teacher U Institute at Hunter College and is looking forward to her second year at Kings.



 

Matt Gillespie   7th Grade Science

Matt Gillespie graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in Human Biology, with a focus in cognitive science and neurophilosophy. Mr. Gillespie spent two years as a research assistant in the Stanford Systems Neuroimaging and Pain Lab, where he focused on the connections between brain activity and post-surgical pain, and he spent a summer interning at the University of California, San Francisco Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is a member of the Teach for America New York City Corps and is currently working towards a Masters in Education at Hunter College. Mr. Gillespie grew up in Palatine, Illinois, and is incredibly excited to be the founding 7th grade science teacher at Kings.


Nicole Gilliams   6th Grade Reading

After graduating from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in 2004, Nicole Gilliams joined Teach for America and taught high school English in New Orleans for two years.  A desire to prepare students to succeed in college led her to work as a college counselor in New Orleans and to pursue her Ed.M. in school counseling at Harvard where she provided academic counseling services for middle school students in the Boston Public Schools.  She is thrilled to transfer her counseling training back into the classroom this year and work with Kings faculty, students, and families as the founding 6th grade Reading teacher. Ms. Gilliams grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and is really excited to be living and working in Brooklyn. 




Jessica Goldberg   5th Grade Reading

Jessica Goldberg is originally from Tucson, Arizona and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology at the University of Arizona and a Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language from Pace University. Ms. Goldberg was accepted into Teach for America and was an ESL teacher in the South Bronx for middle school students with a wide-range of English abilities.  She then became a founding 5th grade reading teacher at Kings Collegiate and is continuing in this role in her third year at Kings Collegiate.  Ms. Goldberg is the 5th grade Team Leader as well as the ELA Department Leader.




Dana Grayson   Dean of Students

Dana Grayson began her career as a New York City Teaching Fellow, teaching third grade in Bedford Stuyvesant and serving as Grade Level Leader for writing. She then joined the Young Scholars Academy, a public middle school in the Bronx, as the founding 6th grade English Language Arts teacher. Ms. Grayson has served as a lecturer for writing at SUNY Empire State, an on-line instructor for Teach for America and NYC Teaching Fellows at Pace University, and an adjunct instructor for Teach for America corps members at Mercy College. Most recently, Ms. Grayson served for a year as a legislative aide in Washington, D.C., to a New York congressman. Her focus was on education, housing, and environmental policy.  Ms. Grayson is pleased to return to Brooklyn as the Dean of Students. Ms. Grayson has a Bachelor’s from NYU, a Master’s in the Sociology of Education from NYU, and a Master’s in Teaching from Pace University.


 


Lauren Harris    Principal

Prior to founding Kings Collegiate Charter School in 2007 with Laura Lee McGovern, Lauren Harris taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics at Roxbury Preparatory Charter School in Boston, MA, and Ferndale Middle School in High Point, NC. During her last year at Roxbury Preparatory Charter School, her students ranked #1 out of all districts statewide on the 8th grade Math MCAS exam.  While at Roxbury Prep, she also served as Grade Level Team Leader and Numeracy Inquiry Group Facilitator. Ms. Harris earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Middle Grades Education at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and a Master of Education degree at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.

 

Kathryn Harvey    6th Grade Math Procedures

Kathryn Harvey joined Kings Collegiate lasted year as the 6th grade Math Procedures teacher. After graduating from John Carroll University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Middle Childhood Education, Ms. Harvey has spent the last three years teaching at Piedmont Open IB Middle School in Charlotte, North Carolina. At Piedmont, Ms. Harvey taught 6th grade math and served as team leader, lead math teacher, student council advisor, and IB Area Leader. She is certified as a level two IB Math teacher and presented at the NCTE conference in New York City in Fall of 2008 on “Data in the Classroom. Ms. Harvey is currently working towards her Masters in Education from Hunter College.  





Kristopher Hirsch    6th Grade History

Kris Hirsch was the founding 5th grade History teacher at Kings Collegiate.  Last year Mr. Hirsch moved up to teach 6th grade world history, his favorite history subject!  Mr. Hirsch comes to Uncommon Schools from Buffalo NY, where he received his Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Fredonia in Secondary Education, and he is currently finishing work on his Masters of Education degree.  Mr. Hirsch is also enrolled in a second Master’s degree program at Hunter College in the newly developed Institute for Urban Teaching program.  Mr. Hirsch taught high school Social Studies (9th, 10th & 12th grade) at Frewsburg Central Schools in upstate New York for six years before coming to Kings.




Carlene Marquez-James    Office Manager

Carlene Marquez-James worked for the New York City Department of Education for the past ten years in the Parent Engagement office, assisting parents across the city with their concerns.  She worked closely with superintendents and principals to help increase parent involvement and raise student performance.  She also provided administrative support to the Executive Director and Budget Operations Manager. She is excited to serve as Kings’ Office Manager.


 


Alyson Morse   6th Math Problem Solving

After graduating from Georgetown University and earning her Bachelor of Arts in Finance and International Business in 2007, Alyson joined Teach for America. She taught high school mathematics in Eastern North Carolina at Northwest High School in Halifax County for the past two years. She is currently working towards her Masters in Middle School General Education with Hunter University’s Teacher U program.





Ranjani Natarajan    Special Education Teacher

Ranjani Natarajan joins Kings Collegiate as a Special Education teacher after teaching 6th-8th grade special education for two years at Valley View Elementary school as a Teach for America Corps member in Phoenix, Arizona.  Prior to this, Ranjani graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a BA in History.  In May 2009, she earned her Master’s of Education degree in Special Education from Arizona State University.  Ranjani is originally from Long Island and is extremely excited to be back in the East Coast as a member of the Kings Collegiate staff!




Tara Page   6th Grade Writing

Tara Page joins Kings Collegiate as the 6th grade Writing teacher.  For the past two years, Miss Page has worked as a college prep instructor for a non-profit organization serving high school juniors and seniors across the city.  Prior to her work with non-profits, Miss Page taught high school English at the Brooklyn Academy for Science and the Environment in Crown Heights.  Miss Page holds a Bachelors degree in English Literature from Barnard College and a Masters in Politics and Education from Teachers College. 


 


Brett Peiser   Founder

Brett Peiser is Founder and former Principal and Executive Director of Boston Collegiate Charter School. Boston Collegiate, a college preparatory middle and high school serving over 500 students, is one of Massachusetts’ highest performing schools. In 2005, Mr. Peiser founded Collegiate Charter Schools, an Uncommon Schools network of middle and high schools in Brooklyn, New York.  The network's first school – Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School – was the #1 ranked public school in New York City on the Department of Education’s 2007 progress reports.  Since then, Mr. Peiser has also helped start Kings Collegiate Charter School and Bedford Stuyvesant Collegiate Charter School as well as two new schools opening in 2009, Brownsville Collegiate Charter School and Uncommon Charter High School.  Mr. Peiser is a graduate of New York City Public Schools and a resident of Brooklyn where he taught History at Midwood High School and founded an after-school community basketball program for Midwood/Flatbush teenagers. Mr. Peiser received a B.A. from Brown University and a MPP degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he also earned the 2001 Rising Star award.





Rachel Power    Special Projects Coordinator

Rachel Power joined Kings in 2008 as the founding Special Projects Coordinator.  Previously, she worked in the children’s publishing industry and in a nonprofit law office.  Ms. Power also currently works as an SAT and Advanced Placement subject tutor for students in the New York City area.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Princeton University and is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan.





Kurt Sarsfield    5th Grade Math Problem Solving

Kurt Sarsfield is returning to Kings Collegiate as the 5th grade Math Problem Solving teacher.  After earning a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, Kurt taught middle school in Austin, Texas for two years.  Before coming to Kings, Kurt also taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade English and Social Studies in Honduras.  Prior to his experiences in the classroom, Kurt worked with youth as an outdoor educator in New Mexico, teaching backpacking skills and group dynamics. 





Scott Schuster    7th Grade Math

Prior to teaching Math at Kings Collegiate, Scott taught second and third grade at P.S. 42 in the Bronx and sixth grade English Language Arts at KIPP Summit Academy in Oakland, CA.  In addition to teaching self-contained classes at P.S. 42, Scott also served as grade leader, intervention consultant, and intervention specialist.  Scott is a Teach for America New York City alumnus and received his B.A. in Political Science from Colgate University and his M.S. in Teaching from Pace University.

 

Rachel Taylor   5th Grade History

Rachel Taylor is thrilled to join Kings as the 5th grade history teacher. She grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated from Harvard College where she majored in Social Studies with a focus on race and urban studies. Ms. Taylor spent three years teaching U.S. and Modern World History and African Diaspora Literature at a high school in Connecticut. After that, she spent a year expanding her horizons by traveling to 17 countries around the world, bringing her grand total to 31. She is currently working toward her M.A. in Teaching of Social Studies and M.Ed. in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University.


 

Jillain Wasick   5th Grade Writing

Jillian is very grateful for the opportunity to work with students, families and staff this year as the fifth-grade writing teacher.  Jillian studied History at McGill University where she also served as a volunteer ESL literacy tutor.  After college she was a youth organizer in New Mexico before moving to California to teach sixth-grade humanities.  Jillian is originally from New Jersey and thrilled to be living in Brooklyn.  She is currently working towards her Masters in Education from Hunter College.
