asked questions.
What is a charter school?
A charter school is an independently run public school granted greater flexibility in its operations, in return for greater accountability for performance. New York charter schools must have their charters renewed every five years. Charter schools accept students completely at random through a lottery.


Is there a cost to attend your school?
Absolutely not. Charter schools are tuition-free, like all public schools. All students, regardless of background, are eligible to submit an application for the lottery.


How many students are in each class at Uncommon Charter High School?
Every class has approximately 20 students each.


Do you provide transportation and breakfast and lunch?
Yes. Students at our school are eligible for the same transportation and food services provided for all New York City public school students.


My child is on an IEP or receiving other special services, can you accommodate his/her needs?
Yes. We accommodate all children and their individual learning needs.


Is there a school uniform?
Yes, the school uniform consists of dark gray pants or dark gray/plaid skirts and Oxford-style shirts and sweaters purchased through our uniform provider.


Will there be junior varsity and varsity sports teams at Uncommon Charter High School?
Yes, there will be varsity sports teams at the high school. We are currently finalizing the list of sports to be offered, which will likely included basketball, baseball/softball, track, etc. We know how important sports are to students and we plan to take advantage of our new high school facility, including our extensive gym space, rooftop field, and easy access to a public park across the street.


Will there be an application process to get in to Uncommon Charter High School?
While our goal is to have every 8th grade student attend Uncommon Charter High School, students must complete certain steps before being promoted:
- Graduate from the 8th grade by passing all school promotion requirements;
- Fill out a high school application form; and
- Be interviewed by the high school Co-Director(s).


When will students start taking Regents exams?
Students will take all necessary Regents exams at the conclusion of the subject’s class. This will vary from subject to subject and grade to grade but families should expect an exam beginning in 9th grade.


When will students start taking the PSAT/SAT exams?
Students will take the PSAT exam in 9th and 10th grades, and the SAT exam in 11th and 12th grades. Students will also take all necessary SAT II exams at the appropriate time.
